Ahead of the debate on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) by the National Assembly, the Kano state Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso has joined other stakeholders from the North West zone to kick against the proposed bill which he argued will further impoverish the northern part of the country if passed into law.
Presenting the position of Kano state during the North West zonal public hearing organized by the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on petroleum industry bill in Kaduna, Governor Kwankwaso said that the bill as proposed by the executive will have devastating consequence on the economies of non-oil producing states and seriously undermine the security of the greater part of the nation.

He stressed that section 116, 117 and 118 of the bill, and another section for the establishment of the national frontier exploration agency should be expunged from the bill for the interest of national unity, equity and fairness.

A former presidential adviser, Tanko Yakassai while condemning the proposed 10 percent host community fund suggested that all revenues accrued from oil should be shared equally across the regions rather than using it to enrich a section of the country.

  1. Ekene says that its okay. This will help compensate for damages inflicted on the oil producing state ecosystem. Mean while the northern part of Nigeria and other non-supporters of the bill should try tell themselves the truth by rectifying the security challenges in their backyard. More so, they should try working on their human and natural mineral resources deposit in their land. Nigeria should know their worth and what they are blessed with instead witch-hunting the federation.

  2. I belief the northerners are just a bunch of selfish and self centred individuals. I support the bill in all material respect. Can I ask the governor a question? What has he done with all he's got so far from the government and what has his region done in the last 60 years to boost our national economy. I'm a Yoruba and I believe the oil producing states deserves whatever they want. They are indeed the food basket of the nation for without them, we cannot have even the little we live on.

  3. The idea that government should own the land (and what lies under it) and the people should be tenants is an exploitative idea introduced in 1970 as a form of official looting.

Fact is that the land and mineral rights belong to the host communities and they should enjoy it 100% with the exception of paying a tax for membership in the country Nigeria.

The North is impoverished because of the attitudes of the people and its leadership, not because of what is going on in other parts of the country.

If they want to be better off it is an inside job, no amount of welfare-ism will make a poor man rich (riches reside in the mind).
