Violence in Borno state is latest example of how the Islamist sect has unleashed chaos in northern Nigeria.
The violence in Borno state is the latest bloody example of how the Islamist sect Boko Haram has unleashed chaos in northern Nigeria.

The group – whose official Arabic name translates as "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad" – says it is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government and establish an Islamic state.

Dubbed Boko Haram or "western education is sinful" by locals for its rejection of European values, the sect was founded in the early 2000s by cleric Mohammed Yusuf and gained a steady following in the northern city of Maiduguri, preaching against secular values in a nation which is split between large Muslim and Christian populations.

Yusuf, who was killed by Nigerian security forces in 2009, retained support by providing meals and economic schemes, including a youth empowerment programme and support for trading. He also arranged cheap marriages between sect members.

The provision of economic and social support by Boko Haram has led some to ascribe the group's growth to a failure of governance in Nigeria. The sect began using violence against government and police in 2003.

Its first large attacks came in Bauchi and Maiduguri in July 2009, with more than 700 people killed in a five-day uprising. The death of Yusuf days later did little to stem the violence.

Since then the group has become increasingly sophisticated in its operations. In 2010 it freed hundreds of prisoners from Bauchi jail, and then went on to launch bombings in Jos and New Year's eve attacks in federal capital city Abuja.

A sustained campaign of deadly church bombings has left hundreds dead, while attacks on telecommunications and infrastructure have caused millions worth of damage.

Boko Haram is also believed to have advanced its operations in recent months by attracting funding and support from other terrorist groups such as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and al-Shabaab, and joining forces with militant groups waging war in northern Mali.

  1. Seriously, what's our government doing? If the sect wants an Islamic state, why don't the government give them one. I'm certain they know already that the Christians are not going to fight back. Even though they are killing Christians, it is not a fight against Christians, but against Nigeria. So since our govrrnment has failed to protect Nigerians, nor able to fight the sect, why don't the government give them the states in the North. Obviously not the Western or the southern, snd Eastern states.
My advise to all christians living in those states to move out. Nigeria is such a big place. If you want to stay, then arm yourselves and fight back. No need staying and waiting to be killed. Its foolishness.
I'm sure that the sect does not want a tribal war, nor a civil war, because the war will definstelly end one day, and the North will be a country, the East will be a country, the West will be a country..
So why don't the government resolve this issue without further killings.
The government should know that the sect will never back down. For God's sake let's slit this country, and you will see the good relationship that will exist amoung the North, East, and West of the regions. I am a Christian.

  2. I dont think there is an entity called Nigeria, we are forced marriage Nation with diverse cultural background, religion belief. we should come round the table and split this country. Let individual region goes it way. why do we suppose to force unity? let North goes its way, West and south should go their way to allow peace.

  3. Thank God they have unleashed ,and aired their intention which I know personally that they are not after the chicken armnesty fund;but power.

President GoodLuck should be very very careful with those so called
northern elders forum because all of them are one, once again they are after the sit of power. Now ,as before the prophesy of late Ikemba Ojukwu is unfolding.

Biafra is demanding for a sovereign State,Boko Haram is now asking for their own-so why can't the President read the handwriting on the wall,am a christain and not happy the way we're being malhandled here-so is better the nation be splintered afterall spiritually is divided ;but physically we claim to be one.

Finaly is even an answer to christain prayers to turn the mess into a miracle. How long shall we remain as penal servitude in this country. This one is not about transfering funds and investing around the globe is all about action to save the Jews. Ojukwu would have succeeded ;but because of the passion and compassion he has for the Igbo's that made him to surrender so his people woun't die finish;but now the keys to everything is in the hand of Igbo's/Christains and here are we ...

  4. Why are they wearing bags over their heads... could it be they are ashamed of themselves... after all there is no terrorist organisation murdering them. LET THE PEOPLE IN THE AFFECTED REIGONS VOTE TO ACCEPT SHARIA LAW IF THEY WANT IT. Along will come amputations, beatings, gougings, stonings, rape, executions, THEY WONT ALLOW A VOTE BECAUSE FREE PEOPLE DONT WANT THAT KIND OF LIFE. ONLY THESE SELF APPOINTED FALSE PROPHETS WANT IT TO SATISFY THEIR BLOOD LUST "LEGALLY" AS THEIR OWN POLICE FORCE. In the name of the innocent unborn do not unleash these dogs on the people.

  7. Point Blank.
The Nigerian state would have known by now that Major. Gideon Orkar who led the April 22 , 1990 was a PATRIOT. Those states he planned to excise from the Nigerian are now the countries headache. What our vissionless leaders then failed to see, the Major saw. And despite the fact that he knew the coup has leaked to govt his love for this nation pushed him to take the suicidal act. He gave the world a window into his thought.
Now we know who the enemies of Nigeria are. May he and his great soldiers continue to rest in peace. AMEN.

  11. In northern Nigeria we have 3 geopolitical zones (North-east, North-central and North-west) each having vast land. If a group wants Islamic state, I think it should be granted. Those for Islam should move to North-west, the Christians should move to the North Central while those that are neither Muslims nor Christians relocate to the North-east. Chikena.
