An Australian nurse has confessed to and pleaded guilty to murdering 11 elderly people under his care after setting fire to the nursing home he worked at in Sydney.
The man, 37-year-old Roger Dean, injured eight other residents of the nursing home in the 2011 fire, and has thus pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.
Dean set the fire hours after police questioned him for stealing prescription drugs from the home.
Initially, Dean tried to act like a hero after the blaze, going so far as to describe his efforts to save those trapped in the home during a television interview with a local news station.
These efforts eventually raised eyebrows when evidence pointed toward him causing the blaze.
Dean finally pleaded guilty in New South Wales state Supreme Court on Monday, and his sentencing hearing is slated to begin on Thursday.
He most likely will face life in prison.
