The Wall Street Journal has announced that Yahoo’s board has unanimously approved Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr, as the search engine giant will pay $1.1 billion for the wildly popular blog platform.
According to sources close to the situation, Tumblr will still operate as an independent business, and a deal could be officially announced as soon as tomorrow.
Tumblr’s “reblogging” feature was crucial to its success, as it allows users to quickly share images, blog entries, and gifs created by others on their own page with the click of a button.
There’s quite literally a Tumblr page for damn near everything, and is one of the most popular platforms for artists, teenagers and internet junkies alike.
The acquisition comes mere months after Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer initially expressed interest in purchasing Tumblr.
26-year-old David Karp founded Tumblr in 2007 in his mother’s apartment in New York City, and has since amassed 100 million users who post 90 million blog posts per day.
This is a make or break deal for both Yahoo and Tumblr, and we’ll find out shortly whether this truly is a match made in tech heaven.
