LAGOS, Nigeria — Amnesty International says 9,000 people have lost homes and livelihoods and thousands more are threatened in a slum area of Lagos destroyed by armed police and bulldozers.
The London-based human rights organization says a state government official claimed they destroyed "a rubbish dump."
But Amnesty published satellite images Monday showing concrete and other structures in "a densely populated area" razed to the ground Feb. 23.
It said residents are sleeping in the open prey to disease and bandits; children are out of school; thousands have lost livelihoods.
The state government spokesman did not answer calls.
Rights groups say tens of thousands have lost homes and workplaces in government efforts to improve facilities in the city of nearly 20 million with no regard for what happens to those in the way.

Yeah this is right. No regards for the citizens and compensation. They use force to bring down pples home and force them back to their village by so doing. They should pay them before demolishing their properties or compensate bcos most of them may have nothing to docafter you have taken their homs away and that is why they are being held and send back to their village calling it reunited beggers and those who don't have mission in Lagos. They call pples home rubbish dump bcos they have the power. They are only creating more povery than civilization bcos those you chase out of home today can end up like bokoharam and bring down the civilization in one day so then what have u achieved. Fashola is a good governor but that is one thing he lacks so very much and need correction. Sending pple to early graves.
