Bouncers fought to keep Scunthorpe prop forward Matthew Probert conscious as he slumped against a wall.
A badly wounded rugby player clings to life with a claw hammer stuck in his head after a horrific attack.

Bouncers fought to keep 21-year-old Matthew Probert conscious as he slumped outside a nightclub with the tool embedded deep in his skull – just inches above his left eye.

The dramatic picture was taken by a clubber in Lincoln near the Revolution Bar after nightclub staff rushed to help Matthew and waited until paramedics arrived.

The Scunthorpe Rugby Club prop forward was today stable in a specialist brain unit at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire hospital where surgeons removed the hammer in an hour-long operation.

He was transferred there from Lincoln County Hospital.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was being quizzed by police following the incident last night.

Matthew’s girlfriend Elisha Davis has written on Facebook thanking well-wishers for their messages of support.

She added: “Matthew seems to be making a good recovery. Hospital staff and family request no visitors for the time being.”

Her sister Tara added: “Op went well. His speech has not been affected.

"Under observation and watching for signs of infection. He is lucky to be alive – I can’t believe it.”

A Scunthorpe Rugby Club spokesman said: “We were shocked to hear what happened – he is popular and well-respected at the club.

"We wish him a speedy recovery”
