Eight people were killed and 25 others seriously injured in a bomb explosion at Kano State School of Hygiene mid day yesterday.

The school, with a student population of 3,000 students, had been on break since May but new students have turned up to collect admission letters.
It was gathered that majority of the victims were students who were in the school for registration when the blast occurred.
A security source said preliminary investigation has shown that the bomb was concealed in a school bag.
Our correspondents report that the bomb exploded near the car park as the provost's car came to a stop at about 2.05pm.
The Provost Dr. Ado H. Bello is said to be unhurt but all efforts to reach him for comment by our reporter was not successful.
A staff who works in the office of the provost (name withheld) said: "When I sighted the provost's vehicle I went to meet him in order to carry his bag as usual. In the process of that we heard a loud sound.
"We learnt from the school staff that they saw somebody carrying a school bag and that it was after he went to the car park area that the bomb exploded with him. His body parts were strewed to the ground and he was among the eight people that died," he said.
Kano state Executive Secretary of the Red Cross, Musa D. Abdullahi, said he counted seven dead bodies at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital. "We counted seven dead persons and 20 injured who are being treated at the Hospital," he said.
Speaking to Daily Trust at the scene of the blast, the Kano State Police Commissioner Adenerele Tasheed Shinaba said eight people died in the explosion, adding that one suspect was arrested.
"Eight persons died and 12 others are injured as a result of the explosion. We have arrested one suspect in connection with the blast and we have commenced investigation on the matter immediately. This will lead us to unravel the mystery surrounding the explosion," he said.

Our correspondents, who went to the school around 3.pm, saw rescue officials involved in the arduous task picking body parts of the victims that littered the school car park area. The blast damaged eight cars and belongings of the victims, just as many shoes littered the ground.
At the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, our correspondents saw many persons struggling to identify their loved ones who were affected by the blast.

The Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who was at the hospital was told that 25 people were injured. Speaking to newsmen, Kwankwaso urged the people of the state to be vigilant.
"We are in 2014, now people should be extra careful and more vigilant. We have many enemies around who have the capacity to do this thing. The school which has to do with health should be the last place to attack." Kwankwaso said.

He urged security agencies in the state to work hard in order to forestall the repeat of the blast, saying; "Things have changed, the way Hausa says 'Kida ya canja rawama sai ta canja." Kwankwaso said.
