Malawi President Prof. Peter Mutharika has pardoned 403 prisoners in a symbol of mercy and forgiveness as the country commemorates its Golden Jubilee of independence.

According to press release made available to Malawi News Agency (Mana) Saturday from Ministry of Home Affairs, the pardoned 403 are those who have served at least half their prison sentences.

The release further states that the freed prisoners are those who had demonstrated good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences.

"The pardon of the 403 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness as the country commemorates its Golden Jubilee of independence," reads part of the statement.

Malawi gained independence from colonial rule on July 6, 1964 and it will clock 50 on Sunday, July 6, 2014.
