Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu last night announced that yet another Nigerian medical worker has succumbed to the deadly Ebola virus disease.
A statement by the minister’s spokesman Dan Nwomeh said the latest victim was “one of the primary contacts of the index Ebola Virus Disease case, the most senior doctor who participated in the management of the patient (Patrick Sawyer, Liberian who imported Ebola to Nigeria), a female consultant physician.”
The health minister did not give the name of the latest victim.
Yesterday’s Ebola death is the fifth in Nigeria.
It came a day after Nigeria recorded a big gain in fighting the spread of the virus, with the discharge of four patients who had recovered from the disease.
Chukwu revealed that the other two patients currently under treatment in the isolation wards are stable and are being taken care of.
Earlier yesterday, the health minister had said the number of infected persons being treated had dropped to three but with the doctor’s death, the figure is now two.
The doctor who died yesterday is said to have fallen into coma for nearly a week before finally passing on. She is survived by her only son and was the first doctor and the fourth Nigerian to die from the virus. The other fatalities were two nurses and an ECOWAS protocol officer.
The very first Ebola death recorded in Nigeria was of the Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, who arrived in Lagos on July 20 and died 4 days late.
