Striker Albert Ebossé sustains fatal head injury after fans pelted players with stones as they left the pitch.

Algerian police are investigating the death of Cameroon international footballer Albert Ebossé who sustained a fatal head injury from a projectile thrown from the stands by fans following his team's defeat in a league game.

The 24-year-old striker with JS Kabylie died on Saturday night after the team's fans pelted the players with stones as they left the pitch, according to Algerian media. Ebossé had scored his team's only goal in the match which was won 2-1 by USM Alger in Tizi Ouzo.

The footballer was declared dead after being rushed to hospital at Tizi Ouzo, 110 kilometres (68 miles) east of Algiers.

USM Alger issued a statement saying that "this terrible news is saddening for football in our nation and in Cameroon, and arrives just like a bombshell." The team sent condolences to Ebossé and to JS Kabylie.

The Algerian professional football league is to hold an emergency board meeting on Monday and has closed the stadium where the incident occurred until further notice. Its disciplinary body plans to question JS Kabylie managers and the match officials.

The president of the African Football Confederation, Issa Hayatou, called for "exemplary sanctions against such a grave act of violence". He said "violence has no place in African football, or in sport in general. African football cannot become a terrain for hooliganism".

Algerian commentators said Ebossé's death was a sad reminder of the violence that has long marred the Algerian game. Algerian players regularly risk their lives in the "cut throat stadiums" where "caillassage" – stone throwing – has become a game-end ritual, journalist Ihsane el-Kadi wrote on the Algerian Huffington Post.

He accused the police of complicity with known delinquents, saying the player's death had the inevitability of a Greek tragedy in which the fans had put to death their favourite player.

Ebossé signed for JS Kabylie in July last year after spending a year with Malaysia's Perak FA club. Previously, he played for the Cameroon teams Coton Sport FC, Unisport Bafang and Douala AC.

Montpellier coach Rolland Courbis, speaking on RMC radio, described him as "a Tarzan, a generous, self-willed and athletic guy".
