President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday at the US-Africa Summit hosted by President Barack Obama for selected African leaders at the J. F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts concert hall in Washington D.C, launched the international edition of the ‘Nigeria: Our Heritage Project’ an initiative geared towards a global positive perception management project for the country.
The event which showcased the very best of Nigerian music and culture was put together by the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation. The very best of Nigeria’s music and culture ambassadors were on ground and did thrill invited guests to the very best of Nigerian culture and arts.
While welcoming all invited guests to the epoch making occasion, the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, High Chief Edem Duke espoused the compelling need to change Nigeria’s narrative with a view to checking and ultimately changing the wrong perception internationally, regionally and internally.
Musical performances by Tosin Martins, CEO of Mavin Records Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Flavour, Inyanya, Davido, the velvet-voiced Abiodun Koya, got the audience excited and on their feet as the artistes kept on dishing out hits after hits from their repertoire of songs.
The performances were interspersed with insightful speeches by Mr. Igho Sanomi, the Chairman, National Heritage Council and Endowment of Arts; Prof. Ade Adefuye, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States of America; Nigeria’s soul sister, US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who gave a moving remark on the greatness that awaits Nigeria in the coming years with the direction being charted by Nigeria: Our Heritage Project.
The elegant dance steps of members of the National Troupe complemented the performances greatly. The appearance of 6-year old Adaure Imana (not real name) and the dexterous display of Akaba Umoighe (not real name) who blew the audience away with his (Igbo) flute, sent the audience to a rapturous applause. Nollywood diva, Rita Dominic-Nwaturuocha’s appearance on stage also sent the audience into another round of excitement as they kept asking for more.
The arrival of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his entourage was greeted with a deafening applause as the general atmosphere became turbo charged at his entry.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who was visibly pleased with the event, was welcomed on stage by the National Troupe, all the artistes and other special dignitaries. While giving his support for the perception change project, the president spoke on government’s effort at placing Nigeria where she rightly belongs on the global scene.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee presented the President with a plaque in appreciation of his commitment to responsible leadership of Africa’s greatest nation. His departure was made more dramatic as the flutist, in company of other dignitaries, escorted him to his waiting vehicle with the piercing sound of the flute
Nigeria’s global literary icon, the late Professor Chinua Achebe was remembered when his grand daughter, Adaobi Ejeyutche, took the stage and read from the timelessThings Fall Apart. Video clips of fascinating Nigeria and inspiring Nigerians were played which were greeted with rousing applause from the audience.
The memorable event ended with an equally well-attended cocktail reception at the National Gallery Roof Terrace within the magnificent Kennedy Center complex.
