President Jacob Zuma said that South Africa is ready for a female president.
Zuma made the comments during a briefing with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Friday.
Bachelet is currently on a state visit to Pretoria.
The president’s comments echoed a similar statement made earlier this week by the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League.
His comments generated gasps from his Cabinet ministers.
Bachelet chuckled and said she had not meant to get Zuma into trouble.
Zuma however didn’t skip a beat and his reply drew unusual applause from the audience of officials and journalists from the two countries.
He said South Africa is a democracy which means everyone is equal.
