President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday night announced various sums of money as rewards for athletes who did the nation proud at international competitions in 2014.

The president hosted hundreds of athletes to a cocktail at the Hall of the Presidential Villa where he expressed the nation’s appreciation for their efforts and encouraged them to bring more laurels to their fatherland. 

They were rewarded based on the ranking of the tournaments and the colours of medals won.

Jonathan explained the disparity in the allocation of money for the athletes in the different tournaments, saying that some of the tournaments were more important than the other.

Gold medallists in the Games led by Blessing Okagbare and powerlifting championships in Dubai received N2.5million each; silver medallists, N1.5million and bronze medallists, N1million.

Coaches at the two championships were rewarded with N1million each for their efforts while officials at the× Games got N700,000 each, whereas their counterparts in the powerlifting received N500,000 each.

Athletes that won gold medals in Wrestling championships went away with N1million each; silver medals N750,000; bronze medallists, N500,000; coaches and officials N1million and N250,000 each respectively. 

Gold medallists in Junior championship  got N750,000, silver N500,000, bronze N250,000 each while coaches and officials got N750,000 and N250,000 each respectively. 

Members of the national female Under-20 team that won silver in Canada, the Super Falconets,  got N1million each, their head coach, N750,000 and officials N500,000 each.

Also rewarded were participants in the African Team Athletics Championships in Morocco; African Youth Games in Botswana; the handball team to Sweden as well as the country’s contingent to World Youth Games who were turned back by authorities in China over Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. 

The athletes were given N500,000 each even though they had no opportunity to participate in the event.
