International entertainment label, Chocolate City has announced its signing of 4 time Grammy nominated Afrobeat superstar, Kuti, to an exclusive management deal.
This signing comes in the wake of Femi Kuti’s 7th studio album release- No Place for My Dream.
Femi’s first record was released in 1995 by Tabu/Motown, followed by the release of Shoki under MCA four years later, which garnered widespread critical acclaim. In 2001 he collaborated with American Artists, Common and Def in a project “Fight to Win” and soon after went on tour in the States with Jane’s Addiction.
In 2004 he opened his club, “The Shrine” where he recorded the live album, “Africa Shrine” and returned in 2008 with “Day by Day” .He released the critically acclaimed, “Africa for Africa” in 2010 which garnered him two Grammy nominations.
Chocolate City’s General Manager, Aibee Abidoye said, “We love good music here at City and are big fans of Kuti and his work- this deal marks another significant milestone in City’s development as the leading entertainment company in and around× Africa.
The Afrobeat genre has found new interpretation through Femi’s prolific body of work and we believe that through this partnership ,we will not only revive the Afrobeat genre (distinct from Afrobeats) as a movement locally but also ensure that it is well positioned internationally and hopefully we can (finally) bring home that much deserved Grammy.”
