German low cost carrier Condor Air has started a new route from Frankfurt to Windhoek, with the landing in Windhoek of its first passenger plane bearing the airline's yellow "Sunny Heart" logo.
"This new direct flight indicates the growing interest in Namibia as a travel destination," said Maureen Posthuma, Europe director of the Namibia Tourism Board.
Condor flies from Frankfurt to Windhoek Mondays and Thursdays, which is a day flight. Return flights from Windhoek are the same nights to Frankfurt.
"Windhoek is the perfect tourist destination for the Condor flight programme and enhances our service in the south of Africa", said Jens Boyd, head of long-haul at Condor.
"With non-stop flights from Windhoek to Frankfurt, we can also offer the sizeable local German community in Namibia a convenient and hassle-free way to travel to Europe," Boyd told Sapa.
The maiden flight was last week.
Condor Air belongs to Thomas Cook Group Airlines and already flies to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.
One-way tickets cost from €380 to €1 000 (business class), return flights around N$ 11 000. Prices vary depending if passengers book online or via a travel agent.
Another low fare airline, Flyafrica, intends to enter Namibia's air space early next year. Flyafrica is a joint venture between Swiss aviation company Nomad Aviation and the Flyafrica Group from Mauritius.
The local company will be known as Namibia flyafrica. Nomad Aviation is already operating in Namibia since several years under the trade name Bay Air.
According to a statement, Flyafrica wants to offer flights between Windhoek and Johannesburg at fares from N$799, significantly lower than what conventional air carriers offer.
Flyafrica started operations in Zimbabwe a few weeks ago and wants to introduce regional flights from Namibia to Zambia and Botswana.
"Namibia flyafrica is a key part of our strategy to build airlines in Africa that will combine low fares with global standards of safety and quality," flyafrica.com Group CEO Adrian Hamilton-Manns said.
