Former Head of State and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday endorsed former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who is contesting for the Kaduna governorship position, saying that that el-Rufai would transform the state which has had development set back.

Buhari, who spoke at the public declaration of the former minister to contest for the Kaduna governorship, said the people of Kaduna would be doing themselves a lot of good if they vote for Mallam el-Rufai to replace the incumbent governor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2015 elections.

According to General Buhari, “I developed cold feet to come and present el-Rufai to you because of the sacrifices which el-Rufai wanted to make on my behalf, which I turned down. But he insisted that I must contest, which I told him that if I must contest you must also come out to contest because I believe he has the qualities required to make State great again.”

“These qualities are firstly competence, integrity and courage. Whoever that is interested in the development of this country, and I have seen the way El-Rufai handled Abuja, we know that El-Rufai loves this country, and he is endowed with these three qualities I have mentioned. So, please people of Kaduna State, I assure you, I am not being arrogant, I am just being honest, if you vote El-Rufai, you are not doing him a favour, but you are doing yourself a favour.”

Buhari argued, “El-Rufai is a kind of person that will respect you if you respect yourself, and if you don’t respect yourself, he will help you go down the drain. I am here deliberately to ask for your support and understanding for el-Rufai and for myself.”

He went on: “All our efforts that we have made will be for nothing if you don’t get your permanent voters’ cards. Your card is your gun against incompetence in the government and against the deception of Nigerians. We have suffered enough. You know what it takes to repair Nigeria, especially the poor infrastructure, insecurity, and above all unemployment. Lets us get the infrastructures working, let’s get the security materially, physically and morally.”

In his address, el-Rufai stated that “over the last few months, I have traversed all the 23 local government areas in State and visited tens of communities”, adding “unfortunately most of the communities have been isolated away from the presence of government.”

According to the former FCT minister, “some of the places I visited were so remote, isolated and cut off from government that it would have been difficult to believe that they were part of Kaduna State”.

He stressed, “I consulted widely with people, from traditional rulers, respected elders and public officials that can speak out, as well as ordinary people who have no voice but rely on someone to speak for them.”

“My purpose was to listen to the people and understand what they wanted from the state government and how the government and the people can work together to develop our state.”

El- Rufai lamented: “to say that I was shocked by the level of neglect is an understatement. Our road networks have fallen into disrepair; our schools have no basic teaching and learning tools; our teachers are not motivated; our hospitals and clinics lack essential resources to mitigate the challenges of healthcare and our civil servants are not being sufficiently motivated.”

He added: “Poverty has become worse; unemployment has become more pervasive; agricultural productivity has declined; internally generated revenues are too low to even pay salaries.
