Workers of the Agency for Food and Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike over salary structure and unpaid allowances.
Instructing NAFDAC members of staff to observe the strike, Chairman of the Lagos Area Council of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Mr. Ibeh Nwokenta, said any NAFDAC staff found on his or her duty post, including those manning land and sea borders would be dealt with by the union.
At the end of the rally announcing the strike, which took place at NAFDAC’s laboratory in Oshodi, Lagos, members of staff at the complex were ordered to pick their personal belongings and vacate the premises.
Nwokenta made it clear that though the strike was called in NAFDAC’s Lagos office, it was binding on all NAFDAC offices and operation bases nationwide.
He listed the delay in converting NAFDAC staff salary structure from Consolidated Researchers and Allied Workers Salary Structure (CONRASS) to Consolidated Health Workers Salary Structure (CONHESS), which he said the workers ought to enjoy.
Other grievances that led to the industrial action include non-payment of allowances, which include productivity allowance, promotion allowance and 13th month allowance.
Nwokenta said skipping of level 10 for workers on level 9, level 11which is the norm for health workers under the Ministry of Health but has not been observed in the agency, was also part of the reasons for the strike.
He warned that the strike would continue indefinitely until all demands are met, stressing: “The Joint Health Workers strike should be separated from NAFDAC workers strike, which will continue indefinitely until all demands are met.”
