Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams was racially abused by Sporting Gijon fans in a Spanish La Liga match at Estadio El Molinon on Sunday night.

The Ghanaian-Spanish winger was targeted by fans of Gijon – particularly at the North end of the stadium – who directed monkey chants in his direction.

Referee Clos Gomez was forced to temporarily halt the game, with Williams clearly affected by the chants.

Williams, 22, is a Spanish national but his father is Ghanaian and the player was courted by the Black Stars before he made his debut for the European country’s national side in May this year.

Williams is the first black player to represent Athletic in the club’s 118-year history. He was born and raised in Bilbao.

Gijon fans, who are notorious for their racist chants, were urged to refrain from their behaviour by an announcement made over the PA system.

Gijon were fined a paltry €3000 back in 2008 for their fans’ racial abuse of Getafe winger Joffre Guerrón.
